Soul Machines and Florence to assist tobacco users quit during Covid-19

Soul Machines has joined the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Access Initiative (AI) for Quitting Tobacco to help share WHO’s life-saving information during the Covid-19 pandemic, combat misinformation, reduce the risk of Covid-19 and help over one billion tobacco users quit. Safety at high speed with igus e-chain system in the linear motor robot

Twice as fast and half as heavy: this is what makes the linear motor robot from Fibro Lapple Technology(FLT) different from other solutions. In order for the linear robot to be able to get production up and running quickly and reliably, a compact, durable and quiet energy supply was required. A side-mounted igus energy chain system with pre-harnessed chainflex cables proved to be the optimal solution. Linear robots are the automation tool of choice for machine or press loading, order picking and high-bay warehouse loading or even for transport and handling tasks. Due to the demands of production for faster, more intelligent and economically profitable solutions, Fibro Lapple Technology has developed a linear robot which fulfils the desire to maximise production performance. In a new carbon design, the linear motor robot saves up to 50% in weight compared to conventional solutions. The weight reduction enables twice the speed, accelerations of up to 26m/s2 and twice the positioning accuracy. Instead of a rack and pinion drive, the designers chose a linear motor because it allows very high dynamics. An unsupported igus energy chain of the E4.1 series ensures a secure energy supply for the z-axis. The integration of a suitable energy chain solution in the compact installation space of the x-axis was a challenge, because a classic gliding or unsupported solution was out of the question due to the high forces. Autonomous mobile robot company SESTO Robotics has launched a dual-function Autonomous Mobile Disinfectant Robot. Addressing the urgent need for tiptop hygiene standards and minimum environment infection risk during Covid-19, the robot can efficiently and effectively disinfect facilities 24-hour, round-the-clock, with its dual functionality, eliminating 99.99% of bacteria, germs and viruses. SESTO HealthGUARD is designed to self-navigate and manoeuvre around tight places, avoiding obstacles and people, making it suitable for many indoor facilities. We should learn to work with robots (and not worry about them taking our jobs)

Some would even have us believe these silicon bogeymen are coming to kill us. It plays straight into people’s darkest fears about technology. When futurists talk about things that haven’t happened yet, they are free to parade educated guesses as fact. But before we take their word for it, we might remember the adage: … in God we trust, all others bring data. In a recent article, the MIT Technology Review tabulated the results of “every study we could find on what automation will do to jobs”. The results show that the expected impacts depend on what you measure. Many predictions, little agreement Of the 19 reports considered in the review, there was enormous variation. Some predicted that a few million jobs would be replaced, while others spoke portentously of tens or hundreds of millions over similar time frames. Some were decidedly upbeat, others quite gloomy. One futurist went so far as to forecast that a billion jobs will be lost to automation by 2022. Contrast this with the more sober prediction from the research and advisory group Gartner of 1.8 million jobs lost by 2020, but with 2.3 million created in the same period – a net increase of 500,000 over the next two years. Why such a big difference? In truth, no one knows how many jobs will be lost and found in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The situation is too complex for simple answers. Top three applications for machine learning in manufacturing Machine learning means machines do not have to be programmed to perform exact tasks on a repetitive basis, they collect data and use it to make informed decisions about their next move. This allows them to correct any errors and improve their operational parameters. There are three key areas where manufacturers can benefit from this technology. Industrial maintenance According to McKinsey, artificial intelligence can generate a ten per cent reduction in maintenance costs, up to a 20 per cent reduction in downtime and a 25 per cent reduction in inspection costs. Machine learning is a significant player in this positive impact of artificial intelligence. In traditional predictive maintenance, engineers program the thresholds for a component’s normal operation into a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. When the component deviates from normal operation, the system alerts an engineer of the developing fault. The problem with this approach is the lack of flexibility. It does not take into consideration variations in plant activity or the context of manufacturing processes. For example, a system may detect a sudden increase in a component’s operating temperature and interpret this as a developing fault, when in fact it is due to the machine being sterilised. Machine learning technology means predictive maintenance systems do not have to be programmed with normal operating thresholds. They use data from the factory floor and IT systems to monitor operational patterns and make informed decisions about what is normal and abnormal activity. SkyDrive launches test flights of first-ever cargo drone

SkyDrive Inc., a leading flying-car developer, has successfully launched test flights of a cargo drone which could revolutionise the way heavy goods are transported and speed up the movement of equipment in remote locations. The first operational testing took place Toyota. It was carried out to test the technology by moving heavy equipment in remote locations. This new technology has been tested with a load capacity of 30kg–utilizing SkyDrive’s world-leading aircraft development technology to achieve high safety standards. There is the potential to develop this further and achieve greater capacity loads of up to 50kg and 80kg, according to demand. The cargo drone also has the potential to change the way products are moved from manufacturers to warehouses and onto depots. SkyDrive is developing the cargo drone for use in industries that carry heavy materials on complex terrain such as slopes, mountain valleys, overpasses, power transmission towers, civil engineering/construction sites, agricultural fields, etc. Usage of cargo drones will help avoid dangerous works, save personnel and shorten the term of works. Update of Hypertherm’s Robotmaster robot programming software available

Hypertherm has released Robotmaster Version 7.1, a major update to the completely redesigned and advanced architecture of its Version 7 software released last year. In total, this new robotic programming software contains more than 40 new features, 500 improvements, and dozens of bug fixes. Many of the changes, driven by customer feedback, are designed to continuously improve the software’s CAD/CAM technology and automate programming, allowing customers to enjoy the best error-free robotic path in just one click. Added features and improvements include: Ability to automatically recognise weld joints embedded in CAD models which simplifies and speeds up programming Ability to transform operations to reduce multiple manual selections Ability to modify operation geometry (a section of the path or the entire path) so the user can match the CAD model to the actual part when a mismatch exists Robotmaster can handle both simple and complex robotic tasks, from straightforward plasma cutting jobs, to deburring and additive manufacturing applications.
